Shipshewana Flea Market to Open May 2
Shipshewana, Ind. — Hundreds of vendors, foodies, makers, small-business owners and farmers will gather as the Shipshewana Flea Market kicks off the 2017 season on Tuesday, May 2.
The Midwest’s largest flea market — along with Shipshewana’s weekly auctions — has been drawing thousands of visitors for 95 years, becoming a do-not-miss Hoosier tradition. Shoppers can look forward to nearly 900 open-air booths with home decorations, clothing, handmade items, accessories, garden supplies and more. There is also a farmer’s market aisle with fresh produce and plants.
The Shipshewana Flea Market will be open every Tuesday and Wednesday from May 2 through September 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special 2017 holiday openings include Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
New this year, the flea market will contain a special section called The Fleature for vendors who sell shabby chic items, local crafts, jewelry, boutique clothing or antiques. The Fleature will be open June through September and will be located in the exhibition area close to the center of the market.
“We wanted to create something new and exciting in the flea market, and the Fleature allows vendors to get together to sell some of the most requested and unique items,” said Michael Christner, Flea Market Director. “Each week of the month will have a different product theme.”
The flea market is located in Shipshewana, Indiana, a small, yet popular tourist town of 650 people. The area attracts generations of families to take in the town’s Amish-based lifestyle.
Visitors are urged to stop by the flea market’s information booth to learn about the area, sign up for daily drawings, and to participate in the flea market scavenger hunt and photo challenge. Shoppers can also view a vendor directory on the free Shipshewana Trading Place mobile app, or they can pick up a print directory when they arrive at the entrance gates.
