Yoder Popcorn Shop in Shipshewana is What Dreams are Made Of
Popcorn has always been one of my favorite snacks. We even used to have "popcorn nights" on Sundays when I was growing up.
Popcorn Night meant that Mom would get a break from cooking, and my family would pop popcorn on the stove for dinner. We would cover the popcorn in melted butter, salt and Parmesan cheese! Yum!
So, you can imagine my delight when I found Yoder Popcorn, an amazing popcorn shop just down the road from downtown Shipshewana in Indiana's Amish Country.
When I walked in the door to this quaint country shoppe located at 7680 W 200 S, Topeka, IN my nose was filled with the wonderful aroma of freshly popped popcorn. I received a friendly greeting and a, "Would you like to try a sample of our popcorn?"
Um...YES!
The shop has everything a popcorn lover could dream of. They have many varieties of unpopped popcorn, microwave popcorn, popping oils, seasonings, popcorn poppers, caramel corn, gifts and more.
Yoder Popcorn has a rich history. Rufus Yoder started growing popcorn on his family farm way back in 1936.
Keeping with the Amish tradition, he would distribute his excess crop among his family and friends - and they were amazed at the excellent quality of the popcorn! Thus, the Yoder Popcorn business was born.
In 1999, the business was purchased by Rufus' great niece, Sharon, along with her husband Richard and their youngest son, Russell and his wife Allyse.
Now, Yoder Popcorn not only operates the Popcorn Shoppe, but also the 1,700 acre farm that surrounds the store. They grow most of the popcorn right there including the premium popcorn and the very popular "Tiny Tender" variety. Other varieties are sourced from farms in Southern Indiana.
The Tiny Tender popcorn is a favorite because it is a very small kernel with a mild corn taste. People love it because it is crispy and nearly hulless!
Other varieties of popcorn at the shoppe include Ladyfinger, Premium White or Yellow, Large Red, Baby Blue, Sunburst, and more.
They also sell Microwave Popcorn for easy popping, and they make their own caramel corn in the upstairs portion of the shoppe!
Yoder Popcorn also has a HUGE selection of salts, seasonings and popcorn oils.
You'll have fun browsing through the cheesy, savory and sweet options they have for flavoring your popccorn.
I had the chance to ask Allyse (one of the owners) about what she likes most about having a store in Shipshewana.
"I enjoy the personal small-town touch we have. We are small - just five employees," she said. "We love having repeat customers come back again and again."
There's just so much to love about Yoder Popcorn. So the next time you're in the Shipshewana area, be sure to stop by their cute store, open Monday through Saturday! (If anything - do it for the free sample!)
