Memorial Day – A Day to Remember!
While there are many great sources on the meaning behind Memorial Day, as well as, the differences between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, we know that it is definitely a day we honor and memorialize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and the country we call home.
Memorial Day Memories
I remember when I was little, veterans always handed out a red flower at the entrance to our local grocery store on Veterans Day to my Dad (he served in the US Army) and I never had any idea behind its meaning, but I have since then discovered this emotional poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.
Memorial, a day, formerly referred to as Decoration Day, also brings back memories of my family taking the time to also remember other loved ones who have passed (knowing fully well this was NOT the intent for this holiday, but that seems to have been a long time tradition for many in any case).
I know that one of the ways those memorial sites are decorated include cemetery saddles, flower urns, concrete statues and memorial benches that are plentiful available throughout the Shipshewana Flea Market season from many of our vendors who will be here Tuesdays and Wednesdays through the end of September each year.
Vendors Offering Memorial Day Products
As one of our vendors who has been here for more than 25 years says, “we have customers who have been visiting us from the beginning, and they feel more like family who come to shop over 15 different styles of these decorations.”
Whether you want silk flowers or garden stones, or even picnic supplies that are another tradition for Memorial Day family activities, Shipshewana Flea Market Vendors have so much knowledge and many unique products to share with you and they love helping their “family, aka customers” honor others. Ask them for their ideas when you visit them and THANK YOU to those veterans both active, retired, and those who have gone on before us!
