Beef Quality Assurance Trainings November 2 & 7, 2023 https://shipshewanatradingplace.com/news/beef-quality-assurance-trainings-november-2-7-2023 Several years ago, the beef industry created a voluntary training and certification program called Beef Quality Assurance or BQA. In that program, producers of beef are taught industry standards for producing good quality beef, are tested, and are then issued a certificate of completion. The topics range from keeping feeds safe from contaminates, animal nutrition, to using drugs in a prescribed and safe manner, how to safely move cattle through barns and feedlots, using herbicides safely on pastures, and even worker safety.

The program was well received by the industry. There are over 1000 BQA certified people in Indiana alone. Many of the large-scale buyers of beef adopted the BQA as their own and will not purchase beef from those without the BQA certificate. In fact, most of the beef from northern Indiana beef and dairy industry flows through packers with that requirement.

Locally, if you sell steers or cull cows or any sort of beef or dairy beef through the auctions, you will be required to have that certification because the auctions sell to packers with a BQA requirement. There are 2 ways to get certified, one is online at www.bqa.org. The other is by attending a meeting.

There are two meeting dates where in-person training will be held via a video conference in Indiana: Nov. 2 and Nov. 7, all beginning at 6:30 pm and ending at 9:00 pm. Eastern time. The northern Indiana sites are:

November 2
• Shipshewana Livestock Auction. Register by calling 260-499-6334
• Kosciusko County Extension Office. Register by calling 547-372-2340

November 7
• Milan Feed & Grain, New Haven. Register by calling 260-925-2562
• Pulaski Co Highway Garage. Register by calling 574-946-3412
• Adams Co Fairground. Register by calling 260-724-5322
• Marshall Co Extension Office. Register by calling 574-935-8545
• Miami Co Fairgrounds Community Building. Register by calling 765-472-1921

For other sites in throughout Indiana, visit https://shorturl.at/DOY58

A few other things to know. The meetings are free. You only need to attend one meeting. There will be an exam at the end of the session. If you do not turn in the exam, you will not be certified. You will be asked for your name, address, phone, and email address when you register. If you do not have email, please let the person know when you register. If you have a common last name, say Yoder or Miller, it will be helpful to include a middle name or initial.

For more information, call one of the Extension Offices listed above.

Shipshewana Auction to Host Antique Auction featuring Once In A Lifetime Barware, Alcohol & Spirits Memorabilia Collection https://shipshewanatradingplace.com/news/shipshewana-auction-to-host-antique-auction-featuring-once-in-a-lifetime-barware-alcohol-spirits-memorabilia-collection

Shipshewana Auction is excited to announce a special collection of 60-year barware and alcohol memorabilia will be sold in their weekly Antique & Misc. Auction.

The featured sellers, Spaces Consignment Showroom says they are "proud to announce that The Buckeye Boys are back!"

They are bringing a once in a lifetime barware, alcohol & spirits related memorabilia collection to Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market  for a two-part auction series (October 28, 2020 & November 18, 2020). This collection was gathered over a 60-year period by world renowned collector Harold W. in Cleveland, Ohio.

Harold’s passion for learning about and collecting alcohol memorabilia stemmed from his youth when he worked at his father’s nightclub in Cleveland, Ohio. These early experiences led Harold to join alcohol memorabilia clubs around the world. This collection was more than just the pieces he collected; it was his way of making friends throughout the world. Thereby, treasuring them and his memories of them.

Harold not only enjoyed the thrill of hunting down these treasures but assembling a 1,200 plus square foot museum in his home to house them. This hunt led him to all sorts of flea markets, antique stores, and house sales in order to never pass up the opportunity to add to this unique collection.

This collection of memorabilia ranges from the turn of the 19th century, pre-Prohibition, pre-war (I.E. WW1 & WW2), to more contemporary bar promotional advertisement. His museum of treasures was grouped by the particular alcohol and style of items. Ironically, even though Harold did not drink alcohol himself, this collection was his pride and joy that he wishes to share with other collectors.

Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy Raises $1600 to Help Local Weekend Food Programs for Kids https://shipshewanatradingplace.com/news/shipshewanas-lights-of-joy-raises-1600-to-help-local-weekend-food-programs-for-kids Shipshewana, Ind. — Shipshewana is now home to more than two million LED Christmas lights displayed in a 1.4-mile-long symphony of spectacular light scenes this holiday season. In its 2nd year now, Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy runs select days through January 4th.

Shipshewana Trading Place and Blue Gate Hospitality have partnered with Winterland, Inc. to bring the new holiday experience to town. They kicked off the season with a community night November 8 with all admission collected going to Blessings in a Backpack and Boomerang Backpacks. This year’s opening night event resulted in a total gift of $1,600 going to provide area kids (typically enrolled in free or reduced lunch programs) with a backpack of healthy foods for the weekend.

“We are honored to be part of such a giving community and proud to be a part of this extra fundraising opportunity that helps these kids throughout the school year, not just at Christmas when we typically see these needs really surface,” said Brian Lambright, Business Development director of Shipshewana Trading Place.

“Shipshewana area residents are always willing to step up to help those in need. They proved that once again by giving back while getting the chance to enjoy Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy,” said Ryan Riegsecker, president of Blue Gate Hospitality.

Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy is set up on the grounds of the Shipshewana RV Park and winds back and forth through dozens of displays. This is the second year, and is even longer and greater than the previous year, with more than 40 displays having been added since last season, including a jolly singing reindeer with a bright red nose just before the exit.

Visitors enter the grounds of the Shipshewana Flea Market on Ind. 5 and drive through the 1.4-mile course of Christmas light scenes, exiting onto C.R. 200 North.

“Shipshewana is a great location for this display because the town is already such a festive place and hosts many special holiday events during the Christmas season, giving families yet another opportunity to make new traditions in town,” organizers stated.

The drive-through light display will be open to visitors select dates now through January 4th. It will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Hours of operation will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. The cost is $15 per vehicle on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and $20 per vehicle on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets may be purchased online at ShipshewanaLightsofJoy.com or at the gate upon entrance.

For more information on Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy, visit ShipshewanaLightsof Joy.com or find the Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy page on Facebook.

Flea Market Vendor Spotlight: George the Sign Painter https://shipshewanatradingplace.com/news/flea-market-vendor-spotlight-george-the-sign-painter Flea Market Vendor Spotlight: George the Sign Painter #644

I dare you to leave George and Sheila Borum's booth without a smile on your face.

If browsing through the sarcastic and witty signs don't get you to chuckle, ask George to tell you about Poor Ol’ George™ and Possum County. Just be prepared to stick around for a while, cause' I feel like he could joke around for hours.

George the Sign Painter has been a Shipshewana Flea Market vendor since 1989. He has been an artist for much longer - he started painting signs when he was just five years old.

"My dad was a sign painter," said George. "He would outline the letters and have me fill them in. Dad would say 'you either work, or you don't eat."

At age fifteen to eighteen, George was illustrating books. He even published a newspaper and a calendar for many, many years. Now, he is 81 years old and is quite the well-known artist, creating signs, folk art and so much more.

"I'll be painting until I die," he said.

He and his wife Sheila travel with a group called the Walldogs about once a year to paint huge, gorgeous, historical murals in towns across the country.

In 2014, the Walldogs actually came here to Shipshewana, Indiana. George helped to paint the Pletchers mural on the Farmstead Event Pavilion, located just across the street from the flea market. If you've ever walked around town, you've probably noticed the murals. Be sure to stop by George's booth to thank him for donating his time!

Oh... and here's a Shipshewana love story for you: George and his wife actually met at the flea market way back in 1990! They set up their booths next to eachother.

"He tells people that he interviewed ten different women at the flea market, but I was the only one with a good corner booth by a gate, so he married me," laughs Sheila .

Now...let's talk for a moment about these custom, hand-painted signs. You've probably seen them all around the flea market at different vendor booths. They're bright, legible and gorgeous. I even have one with my name on it hanging in my office right now.

And where else but the Shipshewana Flea Market could one buy a sign that reads, "We don't skinny dip, we chunky dunk"?

George and Sheila sell party signs, old-time signs and a big selection of flags as well. Visit George the Sign Painter to at building 644 in the Shipshewana Flea Market. (See Dates and Hours).

View a full listing of vendors by picking up a print directory while you're at the flea market, or download our all-new free mobile app.

Market Shopping Tips

Read "How to Shop the Shipshewana Flea Market."

  • Plan your route. It's smartest, especially on busier extended holiday markets, to plan out your shopping day and your entrance and exit strategies. If you're driving in from the South, it's a lot easier to enter the flea market "the back way" from Farver St (200 N). Also be sure to pick up a flea market vendor directory guide from the entrances. Inside is a map of booth spaces and a listing of permanent vendors and their products and space numbers. If you see something you like, write down the booth number so you don't forget.
  • Wear Comfy Shoes. The 26 HUGE aisles are gravel, so it's important to wear your walking shoes!
  • Arrive Early. Want to get the best parking spot? Get to the market early (right at 8:00 a.m. or even before.) It's also a bit cooler in the mornings, which is nice during the warmer summer months.
  • Be prepared. The flea market is open rain or shine, so be sure you come prepared for anything! On hot sunny days, be sure to bring a water bottle and sunscreen. The market does have food courts and water carts located throughout the entire market. You'll also want to bring lots of cash...Although some vendors do accept credit and debit cards. There are also several ATM's on site in case you need them.
  • Rest Frequently. There are several benches, covered rest areas, and food courts. Take a break and regroup to plan which booths you want to visit next. While you're resting, grab a delicious meal or snack...Or perhaps an ice cream cone?
